Most growing Shopify brands hit the same question sooner or later: is it time to move to Shopify Plus? The jump looks dramatic on paper. The Advanced plan costs a few hundred dollars a month, while Plus starts in the thousands. But the subscription is rarely the number that decides it. What matters is whether your business needs the things only Plus does, such as a fully customizable checkout, unlimited B2B catalogs, expansion stores and higher API limits.
This guide compares Shopify and Shopify Plus using Shopify's own published pricing and plan pages (checked on October 26, 2026), shows where Plus pays for itself and where it does not, and gives you a checklist for deciding. Prices change, so confirm the current numbers on Shopify's pricing page before you commit.
The short answer
Stay on a standard Shopify plan (Basic, Grow or Advanced) if your store is mainly direct-to-consumer, your checkout works well with the standard options, and your team fits within 15 staff accounts. Move to Shopify Plus when you need a checkout built around your business rules, wholesale and B2B at scale, several storefronts for different regions or brands, or integrations that hit standard API limits. Very few brands should upgrade for lower card rates alone, as the numbers below show.
Shopify plan pricing in 2026
Shopify now sells four plans: Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. These are the US prices and Shopify Payments rates listed on shopify.com/pricing. Prices, rates and plan names can vary by country.
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Online card rate | Third-party gateway fee | Staff accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $29/mo | $39/mo | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2% | None extra |
| Grow | $89/mo | $105/mo | 2.7% + 30¢ | 1% | 5 |
| Advanced | $359/mo | $399/mo | 2.5% + 30¢ | 0.6% | 15 |
| Plus | From $2,300/mo | From 2.25% + 30¢ | 0.2% | Unlimited | |
The same comparison table on Shopify's site lists 10 inventory locations on Basic, Grow and Advanced versus 200 on Plus, 1 headless storefront versus 25, "Limited" versus "Full" checkout customization, and standard API rate limits on Basic and Grow, up to 2x on select APIs for Advanced and up to 10x on select APIs for Plus. The third-party gateway fee only applies if you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments.
How Shopify Plus pricing works
Shopify Plus is sold on a term. According to the Shopify Help Center's Plus plan page, the monthly fee depends on the term length and your billing currency:
| Billing currency | 1-year term (per month) | 3-year term (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| USD (US)* | $2,500 | $2,300 |
| CAD (Canada) | $3,650 | $3,400 |
| EUR (EU, EEA) | €2,250 | €2,100 |
| GBP (UK) | £1,950 | £1,800 |
*USD pricing also applies in countries without a supported local currency. Shopify says these fees apply to "standard setups and integrations". For more complex, higher-volume businesses there may be a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, and that fee is different for B2B and direct-to-consumer orders. Shopify does not publish a single rate for it, so treat any percentage you see online as an estimate and get a quote from the Shopify Plus team. Shopify's pricing FAQ also notes that on a 1-year or 3-year Plus subscription you can cancel when the term commitment expires, so the term is a real commitment.
What Shopify Plus adds
Plus includes everything in Advanced. Based on the Help Center's list of Plus plan features, these are the additions that most often justify the upgrade.
A fully customizable checkout
The pricing table rates checkout customization as "Limited" on Basic, Grow and Advanced and "Full" on Plus. On Plus you get the Checkout Branding API, checkout extensions and the ability to build different checkout flows for B2B and D2C customers in the same store. For brands with complex shipping, bundles, loyalty or compliance steps, this is often the main reason to upgrade. Every checkout change should be A/B tested; our Shopify CRO checklist covers how.
B2B and wholesale at scale
Shopify B2B is available on every plan, but non-Plus plans are capped at 3 B2B catalogs. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment to companies and locations, deposit requirements, partial payments and payment requests per fulfillment. If you run wholesale through a separate store or a spreadsheet today, this alone can make the case.
Expansion stores and international selling
Plus supports 9 expansion stores for internationalization, separate physical locations and similar purposes, and each live expansion store needs its own theme license. All plans include unlimited country or region markets through Shopify Markets, so you do not need Plus just to sell in more countries. You need it when you want separate stores, for example a different catalog, brand or B2B setup per region.
Headless, APIs and custom logic
Plus supports up to 25 custom storefronts built with Hydrogen and deployed on Oxygen, higher API rate limits, Plus-only API resources such as Multipass and gift card endpoints, and custom apps built with Shopify Functions for discounts, shipping and payment logic. If you are weighing a headless build, read our comparison of Shopify Plus vs. headless commerce first.
Operations and support
Plus adds unlimited staff accounts, custom user groups, up to 200 inventory locations, unlimited staging stores, up to 100 themes in the account, 1 TB of file storage per store, Launchpad for scheduled promotions, access to Plus Certified apps and priority 24/7 phone support. The first 20 POS Pro locations are included.
Does Shopify Plus pay for itself on fees?
A common argument for Plus is that the lower card rate covers the subscription. Here is the arithmetic using US list prices from Shopify's pricing page:
- Plus on a 3-year term costs $2,300 a month. Advanced billed yearly costs $359. The difference is $1,941 a month.
- The listed online standard card rate drops from 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced to 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus, a saving of 0.25% of card sales. The 30¢ part is the same.
- To save $1,941 a month at 0.25%, you would need about $776,400 a month in online card sales through Shopify Payments, or roughly $9.3 million a year.
- If you use a third-party gateway, the Shopify fee drops from 0.6% to 0.2%, a saving of 0.4%. Break-even on that alone is about $485,250 a month in sales through that gateway.
This is a simplified model. It ignores premium and international card rates, any variable platform fee on your quote, apps you could drop because Plus covers the feature, and any rates you negotiate. But it makes the point clearly: for most brands, Plus is a decision about capabilities and team time, not fees.
When to upgrade to Shopify Plus
These are the signals we look for when advising clients:
- You need checkout logic the standard plans cannot support, such as custom fields, B2B payment terms or market-specific checkout blocks.
- You sell wholesale and need more than 3 B2B catalogs, or company-specific pricing and payment terms.
- You want separate storefronts for regions, brands or B2B, within the 9 expansion stores Plus includes.
- Your ERP, PIM or OMS integrations are hitting API rate limits.
- Your team has outgrown 15 staff accounts, or you need custom permission groups.
- You run high-traffic launches and want scheduled promotions and bot protection.
- You are planning a headless storefront and want Hydrogen and Oxygen included.
If none of these apply, Advanced is usually the better choice. Spend the difference on conversion work, content or automation instead.
The real cost of Shopify Plus
Shopify's Help Center lists the other costs to budget for: custom development by Shopify Plus Partners, one-time theme purchases and third-party apps. In our experience the build is usually the biggest line in year one, especially when moving from another platform. A sensible total cost of ownership model over the length of your term includes:
- The Plus subscription for your chosen term and currency, plus any variable platform fee.
- Payment processing at your actual mix of domestic, premium and international cards.
- Theme licenses for the main store and each live expansion store.
- Apps, minus any you can cancel because Plus covers the feature.
- Design, development, data migration and QA.
- Ongoing CRO, maintenance and support.
How to upgrade without losing momentum
Upgrading an existing Shopify store to Plus does not require a rebuild. Your products, customers and orders stay where they are. The work is in using the new capabilities well. Before you sign:
- List the problems Plus must solve and match each one to a specific Plus feature.
- Choose the term. A 3-year term lowers the monthly fee but locks you in for longer.
- Ask Shopify whether a variable platform fee applies to your revenue and business model.
- Audit your apps and integrations for anything Plus replaces or anything that needs Plus-only APIs.
- Plan checkout customizations, B2B setup and expansion stores as a roadmap, then test each change.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 USD per month on a 3-year term or $2,500 USD per month on a 1-year term. In Canada it is $3,400 CAD or $3,650 CAD per month. Complex, higher-volume businesses may also pay a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model.
What is the difference between Shopify and Shopify Plus?
Shopify Plus includes everything in the Advanced plan and adds full checkout customization, unlimited B2B catalogs, 9 expansion stores, up to 25 headless storefronts, higher API limits, unlimited staff accounts, 200 inventory locations and priority 24/7 phone support.
Is Shopify Plus worth it for lower transaction fees?
Usually not on fees alone. Using US list prices, the 0.25% lower online card rate on Plus only covers the extra subscription cost at about $776,400 a month in online card sales. Plus is worth it when you need its features.
Do I need Shopify Plus to sell internationally?
No. All Shopify plans include unlimited country or region markets through Shopify Markets. Plus adds expansion stores, which you need when you want separate storefronts with their own catalogs, brands or B2B setups.
Does upgrading to Shopify Plus require a new website?
No. Upgrading an existing Shopify store keeps your products, customers and orders. The work is in using Plus features such as checkout extensions, B2B and expansion stores. Moving from another platform is a full migration.
